New engine with a lot of MotoGP

GSX-R has always stood for a wide speed range: a lot of torque in the low and medium speed range, combined with an exciting top performance. The new GSX-R engine has also been developed for the highest maximum performance of the class, without compromising the torque in the low and medium speed range. To achieve this ambitious development goal, technologies of the GSX-RR MotoGP engine have been transferred to the new GSX-R engine.

Suzuki Racing Variable Valve Timing (SR-VVT)

The sprocket of the intake camshaft is divided into the guide plate and the actual gear wheel. Both have grooves which are not parallel to one another. There are 12 steel balls in the grooves. If these move outwards at high speeds due to the centrifugal forces, the guide plate and, with it, the camshaft are rotated against the gearwheel. With this purely mechanical adjustment, the intake valves open later. Above all, they close later. A very important contribution to increasing the maximum performance without sacrificing performance in the low and medium speed range.

Suzuki Racing Finger Follower Valve Train (SR-FFVT)

The valves of the new GSX-R1000 are actuated by a drag-type design as developed in MotoGP and Formula 1. This allows for higher speeds with a more precise valve control. A drag lever weighs only 10 grams as compared to 16 grams for the previous pintle control. The actual moving mass fraction of the rotatably mounted drag lever is even only 3 grams. For this reason, the system also allows a greater valve lift beyond the better speed. As in the current MotoGP GSX-RR, the new GSX-R1000 uses DLC-coated drag levers.

Suzuki Exhaust Tuning-Alpha (SET-α)

The Suzuki engineers installed servo-controlled dampers in the two interference pipes between the exhaust manifolds of cylinders 1 and 4, as well as 2 and 3. The flaps are closed at low and medium speeds, and resonance vibrations in the exhaust system can provide higher torque in this range. The connection between the flaps is opened only at high speeds. A significant plus in maximum performance results from the reduced backpressure of the exhaust gas, which in turn has its cause in the additionally released pipe cross-section and volume.

Suzuki Top Feed Injector (S-TFI)

Secondary injection nozzles above the intake funnels are activated at higher speeds and deliver finely atomized fuel for the combustion chambers. More performance, better response and more efficient combustion are the advantages.

Suzuki Dual Stage Intake (S-DSI)

This new system utilizes the advantages of variable-length intake manifolds, also without their complexity, extra weight and extra costs.
Normally, short intake funnels are good for peak performance, while long tubes deliver more torque in lower speed ranges. Thanks to the laws of the flow gauge, the new GSX-R1000 benefits in both areas, as the intake tract operates at lower engine speeds than with long intake hoppers and, at high speeds, outweighs the effects of the short funnels.

Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (S-DMS)

S-DMS allows the driver to choose from three mappings programmed for different motor characteristics. Gas intake and power output can be adjusted from gentle to aggressive on the course of the route, grip level and traffic conditions. The appropriate mode is set by means of a switch on the left handlebar grip. Full performance is available with all mappings. Together with the 10-fold adjustable traction control, the right setting can be found for each track.

Engine construction for faster cornering

The existing GSX-R has its share of races and won titles in national superbike and long-distance racing series. Moreover, many world-endurance titles unrivaled. Professional racers and their teams demanded more feeling for the front wheel and more traction under racing conditions. It is known that the length and the mounting position of the motor change these characteristics. So the engineers set the cylinder row by 6 ° steeper than before, reaching 22 mm less mounting length, measured from the front edge of the cylinder head to the rear edge of the engine housing. As a result, the distance between the front axle and the swing axle could be reduced by 20 mm. Although each piston is 1.5 mm wider than its predecessor, the new engine has also narrowed by 6.6 mm.


The state-of-the-art electronics of the new GSX-R consists of the fully electronic engine management system, the heart of which is the ECM with two 32-bit processors and the latest generation of the ABS control unit. The support of the Continental sensor unit, IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), is required for inclined ABS and traction control. It registers every movement of the machine around the 3 axles and forwards this information to the motor control and ABS.

MotionTrack TCS

The new GSX-R1000 comes with MotionTrack TCS. Depending on the conditions, personal preferences and driving conditions, 10 fine grades of traction control are available. All settings can be changed when the throttle is closed while driving. The traction control evaluates the information from the sensors for wheel and crankshaft rotational speed, throttle position, gear position and position change (IMU) at a distance of 4 milliseconds, reduces the engine power by igniting the ignition timing and the throttle position quickly and with an existing or expected traction loss.

Quickshift system

The GSX-R1000R is equipped with the Suzuki Racing Quickshifter, which allows the shifting up and down without clutch or throttle. The system interrupts the flow of power in the gearbox for trouble-free gear changes even at full throttle for 50-75 milliseconds, thus enabling virtually uninterrupted acceleration.

Launch Control System

The Launch Control System helps the racing driver at the optimum start. The system automatically limits the engine speed and optimizes the torque output for perfect acceleration, while the driver keeps the throttle fully open and can fully concentrate on the optimum engagement of the clutch.

Suzuki Easy Start System

When starting the motorcycle, the driver usually keeps the starter button depressed until the engine ignites. With the Suzuki Easy Start system, just as with a modern car, a brief one-off pressure on the starter button is sufficient. The control unit detects the signal and runs the starter for a certain period of time.

Low RPM Assist

Via the clutch switch and the idling control, the engine speed is increased slightly at start-up and at low speed. This new feature allows for smoother start-up and better control of the engine in stop-and-go traffic.

New Suzuki Clutch Assistance System (S-CAS)

The new GSX-R1000 comes with a revised clutch assistant. Newly designed ramps optimize both the system's functions, the controlled slipping of the clutch during hard downshifting, and the increase of the contact pressure on the clutch discs under load. The latter function allows softer clutch springs and thus less manual force to pull the clutch.

Ergonomically designed fuel tank

The upper edge of the tank is 21 mm lower than before, the driver can make himself smaller on the straight line.
The rear end of the tank has been redesigned for more freedom of movement on the course.
The front surfaces have also been rearranged so that the driver can better support himself on the track.

Electronically controlled steering damper

At low speed, the damper hardly works and thus does not hinder the easy steerability. At higher speeds, if more damping is required and does not interfere, the damper valve is closed accordingly.

Showa BFF (Balance Free Front Fork)

The GSX-R1000R comes with the latest generation of the Showa BFF® front fork (Balance Free Front Fork), which has been developed in racing and is now also available for series production. The Showa BFF® fork provides increased performance through better controlled damper movement and improves the handling and performance of the GSX-R1000R with extremely sensitive response and constant high performance.

Showa BFRC Lite (Balance Free Rear Cushion)

BFRC® lite is the latest version of the Showa BalanceFree rear suspension, which is significantly lighter than the previous version.
The unique hydraulic system circuit minimizes fluctuations in the pressure distribution, which are unavoidable in conventional damper systems. Furthermore, the damping force generating mechanism was integrated in a single housing on the outer side of the damper cylinder.

New Brembo brake discs and Brembo radial pistons

The new Brembo discs measure 320 mm in diameter and thus 10 more than before.
The bearing of the actual brake disc on the carrier is new and consists of conventional floaters and the new T-Drive.

New lightweight 6-spoke aluminum cast irons contribute to spring-loaded handling and sporty appearance. Known Bridgestone RS10 are mounted as standard.


Track Ready Design

Inspired by the MotoGP, the design improves the aerodynamics and thus the top speed as well as the handling of the new GSX-R1000.

Slotted brake lever

In order to prevent the front wheel brake from being operated by wind pressure at high speed, the brake lever is perforated at the outer end.

Aerodynamic lining

In order to improve aerodynamics, the new trim has been made more compact and 16 mm narrower. Thanks to the narrower front, air resistance and lift are significantly reduced compared to the previous model. Even the panel screws were optimized with flat head for low air resistance. The new petrol tank is lower and slimmer, so the driver can make himself even better behind the fairing.

SUZUKI Ram Air Direct (SRAD)

Larger air intakes were brought closer to the center thanks to the compact LED spotlight, the point of the highest air pressure.
The inlets have been rounded at the crossover for more volume flow to the airbox and thus contribute to a significantly improved suction efficiency.

The new GSX-R1000 is the first Suzuki with LED headlights. The headlamp with high-power LEDs is as compact as light and contributes to the sharp look and low weight of the new GSX-R.
